Django Django - Firewater
Before the flanged drum machine intro drifts into an ethereal, echoed finale of arpeggiated synths and soaring vocal “ahs” screaming for salvation, Edinburgh band, Django Django deal with the deleterious effects of getting pissed night after night in the pub with their campfire singalong: Firewater. First off, this is a slept on classic album of 2012, up there with other greats: Beach House ‘Bloom’, Cat Power ‘Sun’, Fiona Apple ‘The Idler Wheel…’ Kendrick Lamar ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city’ and Frank Ocean ‘Channel Orange’. And ‘Django Django’ deserves to be up there with them; in its entirety it feels like a modern homage to Pet Sounds, and “Firewater,” with its harmonized vocals and rickety acoustic guitar, evoke hints of not only the Beach Boys but also the Beta Band (it’s probably no coincidence that drummer David Maclean is the younger brother of Beta Band keyboardist John Maclean) as the track evolves into a glorious, psychedelic sing-a-along.
