En Attendant Ana - Wonder
With “Wonder,” Parisian indie rockers En Attendant Ana do a brilliant job channeling elements of Neu!, The Mamas and the Papas and Stereolab to create a jangly guitar fever dream that’s somehow both melancholic and inspirational, simultaneously. Taken from the 2023 album Principia on Sub Pop, “Wonder” begins as a traditional, twee pop tune before evolving into an exciting monster. It begins with the ethereal voice of Margaux Bouchaudon almost pleading with herself, “How can I stop, and do I want it?” before a pulsating bass line forcefully shifts the musical tone and forces her to reluctantly convince herself, “I’m a good human being, my mama said, and I hope she’s right…” As she struggles to come to terms with her life choices the pendulum swings back again leading her to wonder, “Who am I fooling? Where’s the tape to rewind?” The steady, wispy reed organ and looped guitar line eventually devolves into crunching distortion and delayed synth screams—as she longs to redo a failed past relationship that, along with the instrumentation, heads off the tracks.
